GRANULAR ORGANIC BASED FERTILISERS

THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD QUALITY GRASSLAND

Grass is the most extensive crop grown in the United Kingdom, with its growth characteristics and variety differences being well known. Response in terms of yield to N, P and K chemical fertiliser treatments under various regimes is also well known.

There is another important aspect to grass production that demands more study, and that is quality The effect of grass quality on milk yield, live weight gain, wool production, breeding performance, animal fertility and animal health in general is of major significance in farm profitability.

HumberPalmers organic based fertilisers can make a vital contribution to all these factors.

·     WHAT ARE HUMBER PALMERS ORGANIC BASED FERTILISERS?

HumberPalmers organic based fertilisers are made from a combination of carefully selected organic and mineral raw materials. The organic base is derived from a well-researched unique formulation of vegetable origins that is high in organic carbon and humic substances.

This enables HumberPalmers to release nutrients to the plant more closely to the crop requirements, thus reducing leaching and keeping volatilisation to a minimum.

All HumberPalmers fertilisers are in the granular form for easy spreading and good storage. They are a true granule, not a blend.

·     GOOD GRASS AND HIGH QUALITY YIELD

Grass is by far the cheapest feed for livestock - whether it be grazed or made into silage or hay.

For example, most dairy farmers currently achieve 45% of cow's diet from grass. If this were to be increased to 55%, the farmer would achieve an increased gross margin

·      HIGHER DRY MATTER CONTENT

Using HumberPalmers will also increase dry matter production by 35%, relative to mineral fertilisers.

SILAGE GRASS

A silage cut will remove as much potassium as it will nitrogen. Our fertiliser recommendations (for silage grass) are for an application of, a high potash compound in the autumn, followed by a high 'N' compound in the spring. Many HumberPalmers customers are growing excellent silage using this method.

·     EFFICIENCY AND LESS LEACHING

Due to the increased efficiency of plant food nutrients. HumberPalmers will not leach significantly and will enable potash to be applied in the autumn, avoiding the risk of hypomagnesaemia.

Where slurry or firm yard manure has not been applied and where fields are repetitively used for silage production, use of- a high potash compound fertiliser is particularly important in the autumn.

·      TRACE ELEMENTS

The humic acid content in HumberPalmers will release trace elements already in the soil and, when combined with those in the fertiliser, trace element deficiency should not be a problem unless your particular area is deficient in a specific trace element.

Many farmers are telling us that since using HumberPalmers their vet bill, have more than halved!

·          SULPHUR CONTENT

All Humber Palmers fertilisers contain significant quantities of sulphur in the sulphate form essential for maximum performance of applied nitrogen.

(Please see our Sulphur leaflet for more information

Sulphur atmospheric deposition is declining sharply in the U.K. with a large proportion of the U.K. now showing a response to applied sulphur on OSR, silage and winter cereals, particularly milling wheat.

(Many technical papers give the sulphur requirement as S to SO3 divide by, 0.4; 8% S Then becomes 20% SO3)

When no deficiency is thought likely, crops often still respond to sulphur applications.

·      ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY REDUCED WASTAGE

HumberPalmers fertilisers supply nutrients to the growing plant closely aligned to the plant requirements bill: dependent on moisture, temperature and day length, thus achieving reduced wastage. Many crops using mineral fertilisers will only take up 50% of the nutrients applied; with HumberPalmers the figure is closer to 85%,

·       GRAZING GRASS - IMPROVED PALATABILITY

Fields fertilised with HumberPalmers will carry more stock for a longer period because of the density of the grass sward.

In farm trials stock have consistently shown a preference for grass grown on HumberPalmers their preference for HumberPalmers repeatedly selecting the HumberPalmers side of the field!

·      HAY GRASS

HumberPalmers grows higher dry matter hay which tends to make easier and store better.

In addition, bales do not shrink as much when in the barn.
